PADUCAH, Ky. (March 7, 2022) – Assistance from the public has helped the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) to develop a description of a vehicle that spilled large amounts of paint along U.S. 62 at mile point 11.7 near the Interstate 24 Paducah Exit 7 Interchange.
KYTC District 1 received calls about a large quantity of white paint spilled along the eastbound lanes of U.S. 62 near the eastbound Jack Paxton Boulevard connector that provides access to Whitehaven Welcome Center.
The spill was thought to have occurred sometime before about 1 p.m., on Thursday, March 3. Tips provided by the public helped to refine the timeline, allowing West Kentucky Community and Technical College to locate the vehicle on security video.
The video shows a grey pickup with a topper exiting I-24 eastbound, then heading west on U.S. 62. The vehicle then makes a U-Turn at the Memorial Drive intersection near Milner and Orr Funeral Home to head east on U.S. 62.
The video would suggest a large container of paint in the truck bed may have overturned during the U-Turn, prompting the driver to stop in the passing lane. The video indicates the pickup was stopped for about two minutes while the driver got out to check on the load near the Jack Paxton Boulevard traffic signal. Witnesses indicated when the driver opened the truck tailgate, a large amount of paint spilled into the passing lane.
Some citizens indicated the vehicle was a grey pickup with a topper – possibly a Ford. Witnesses indicated the pickup may have continued east on U.S. 61, then turned back west on Interstate 24. This pickup would likely have white paint on the rear bumper. They also provided a description of the driver.
A number of motorists who drove through the spill report paint splattered their vehicles. Removing the paint has cost some vehicle owners more than $300.
KYTC District 1 is asking the public to review the video at www.Facebook.com with the hope someone will be able to further identify the vehicle.
Anyone with information on the vehicle or the driver is asked to contact the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at 270-898-2431. Information may also be provided to the Paducah Police Department or Kentucky State Police Mayfield Post One.
