It’s been 17 years since the Marshals have traveled across Hwy. 68 to play the Eagles in the Christian Fellowship gym. Thursday’s game wrapped up the two-game series this season between the two teams after CFS rejoined the 4th District this year.
Marshall County won 72-48 to earn the sweep and improve to 3-2 in the district, currently tied with Calloway County. They meet the Lakers in an important game tonight at Calloway and hope to even that series after a 64-61 loss on Jan. 21.
The Marshals jumped out to a 6-0 lead before a field goal from the Eagles’ Isaac Hovekamp kicked off an 8-0 run to take the lead at 8-6. Trey Wall tied it up before Bryce Cary put the Eagles back up by two, firing up the Eagles home crowd. Kole Sedlock dropped in a three and followed with a two-point basket for a 13-10 lead, but it was Cary again who hit a 3-pointer to finish out the first quarter on a 13-13 tie.
The Marshals went up 27-13 following a 14-0 run in the second quarter that ended on a basket by Elijah Grigg who drew the foul and completed the 3-point play. A 3-pointer by Colby Schroader closed out the half on a 36-21 Marshall lead.
Quinn Smith scored 15 of his team-leading 17 points in the second half. He dropped in nine of the Marshals 18 third quarter points to boost the lead to 54-36.
Cole Mills, back on the floor after an injury in the Jan. 22 game against Mayfield, dropped in eight fourth quarter points for the Marshals including two 3-pointers. The Eagles fourth quarter effort was led by Luke Grigg with eight of their 12 points and he led CFS with 14 in the game.
