On Senior Night in front of a large enthusiastic crowd at Reed Conder Gymnasium, the Marshals picked up a huge 4th District win over Murray. The 53-50 win earned the Marshals a district split with Murray and it was the Tigers first district loss of the season and just second to a 1st Region team.
Senior Colby Schroader led all scorers with 20 points and his four 3-pointers led in the teams 10 on the night.
Kole Sedlock scored five of the Marshals first 11 points with a couple of 3-pointers added by Talon Smothers and Schroader prompting a Murray time out, trailing 11-4. The Tigers finished out the quarter with a 6-2 run to cut the Marshals lead to 13-10 at the end of the first.
Murray’s Grant Whitaker cut the lead to one point and they went up 14-13 on free throws from Trey Boggess that capped an 8-0 run. Murray’s lead grew to six before Schroader cut it in half with his second three but Zavion Carman dropped in the final field goal of the half to put Murray up 23-18 at halftime.
Two behind the arc from Schroader and Trey Wall cut the Murray lead to one to open the second half and Sedlock gave the Marshals the lead at 26-25. Up by seven at 36-29, Murray would cut it back to one on consecutive 3-pointers from Boggess and Whitaker.
With one second left in the third quarter, Wall was fouled shooting a three and hit all three at the line to put the Marshals up 39-35 heading into the final eight minutes.
Schroader hit the Marshals ninth and 10th 3-pointers back-to-back and the lead was back to six at 45-39. A couple of free throws by Quinn Smith gave them their biggest lead of the game at 47-39 before Murray began chipping away to draw to within one point at 49-48.
Wade Moore made good on his one and one opportunity, hitting both at the line to bump the lead back to 51-48 with 22.5 seconds remaining. Hanging on to a 53-50 lead, a 3-point attempt by Whitaker at the buzzer to tie it for Murray wouldn’t fall.
The Marshals will be looking for two more district wins when they play at Christian Fellowship (9-13) Thursday and travel to Calloway County (14-11) on Friday.
