Barney Thweatt, Coy Creason recognized for induction into Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame

Barney Thweatt thanked everyone for their support and expressed how honored he was to receive the award and be recognized for his contribution to high school basketball in the state of Kentucky.

Barney Thweatt and the late Coy Creason were inducted into the 2020 Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame and were recognized for this achievement at a Hall of Fame presentation that took place between games Tuesday at Marshall County High School.

Both were members of the 1948 Brewers State Championship team that finished with an unbeaten record of 36-0 and are the last undefeated state champions in the state of Kentucky.

Jeff Waters, representing the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame and Athletic Director Mike Johnson representing Marshall County High School presented the awards.

Coy was the 1948 Kentucky High School Player of the Year and went on to a great collegiate career at Memphis State University. In 1997, he was inducted into the Memphis State University Hall of Fame. Representing Coy on Tuesday were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Chris, Mandy, Annie and Gray Lane along with Michael, Leslie, Macoy and Avery Taylor.

Barney was captain of the Brewer’s 1948 team and selected First Team All-State. He went on to play in college at Memphis State University and Murray State University and later was a successful high school coach, leading Oldham County and Paducah Tilghman to the state tournament.

Barney was joined at the presentation by family members Mark Thweatt, Nick Thweatt, Kamdynn Thweatt, Shannon Copeland, Hillary Copeland, Carly Copeland, Danny Prince, Stephen Johnson, Gretchen Johnson and Barney’s caregivers Heather Chambers, Kristen Clark, Phillis Collins, Shawna Darnall, LeAnna Frizzell, Claudine Morehead and Andrew Smith.
