Good morning,
TVA and local power company crews, working 24/7, continue to make progress restoring the power system. As previously mentioned, initial damage assessments are complete and many of the materials to support repairs are being transported to the area.
Due to the amount of damage in some locations, complete power restoration may be a long process. Our highest priority is the safety of line crews and other emergency responders working in the rescue and recovery areas. Click here for a video illustrating some of the damage occurred over the weekend and work being done to assist our state and local partners.
Below are the latest TVA updates (as of Monday morning) for your situational awareness:
- All potentially impacted power lines have been fully accessed for damage. A second assessment is underway to determine if any nearby trees pose an immediate threat to the lines.
- 29 TVA transmission lines are down
- 17 customer connection points are without service, most in Kentucky
- At least 100 TVA power structures (towers and poles) are damaged or destroyed
In addition to TVA’s power transmissions system, several local power companies have extensive damage to their own power distribution systems – both systems must be repaired to fully restore power to all areas. That said, TVA’s overall power system remains stable and secure, even with lower temperatures this morning that increased power demands.
As of this morning, TVA has restored power to 12 customer connection points serving:
- West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation
- Murray Electric System
- Benton Electric Service
- Glasgow Electric Plant Board
- Lexington Electric Service
Also, nine TVA lines directly serving local power companies remain out of service and are our priority for restoration. The necessary engineering work to repair 17 affected lines has been completed and a total of twenty-one TVA line crews (160 individuals) and additional contractor crews are currently in the field supporting restoration efforts. The necessary materials to repair seven impacted lines is available on site or will be delivered today.
TVA continues its efforts coordinating with state, county and local officials, and others to determine what additional assistance we can provide those most directly impacted by the storms. And TVA is taking action in the following ways:
- Supplying food and support to the Mayfield Electric team as they continue their rescue and recovery efforts;
- Coordinating with local officials to deliver drinking water to Mayfield, Kentucky, due to the destruction of their city water system;
- Delivering portable transformers to speed the temporary restoration of damaged substations while permanent repairs can be made;
- Preparing to supply portable trailers and other support to impacted local power companies to assist them with recovery efforts;
- Continuing outreach to folks on the ground, including TVA team members and their families in the area, to provide support;
- Dispatched three helicopters from TVA’s Aviation Services to the area to assist with damage assessment and restoration efforts by TVA and local power companies;
- Dispatching additional power system repair supplies and components to the impacted area;
- Relocating additional TVA line crews to the area to assist with restoration;
- Opened its Mayfield service center for use by impacted local power companies to provide a central location for accessing needed repair supplies and supporting restoration;
- Dispatched additional TVA vegetation maintenance personnel who are assisting with clearing trees and other debris to support transmission line repair; and,
- TVA Police continues to assist local law enforcement with traffic control.
TVA and local power companies understand how important electric service is and we will work to restore power to affected areas as soon as we can safely do so.
