
Marshall County played Apollo Friday on a rainy, soggy Homecoming night. It was the 30th time the two programs have played one another. The Marshals last win over Apollo came in 2016 when they won 42-35 and they will have to wait another year to pick up the next win after Friday’s 28-14 loss to the Eagles.
Tied 14-14 late in the first half, the Marshals drive to score the go-ahead points ended with an interception. Apollo turned it into points on a 45 yard touchdown reception with 35 seconds remaining to lead 21-14 at halftime.
The two first half touchdowns for the Marshals came on a four yard run by Aiden Dunigan that followed a 35 yard gain on a pass from Quinn Smith. The second touchdown was scored on a 78 yard pass reception from Smith to Logan Reese.
Apollo scored their final touchdown late in the third quarter.
Marshall County had 269 yards in total offense. They were led in their 122 rushing yards by Landon Utley with 97 yards on 15 carries. Quinn Smith was 7-of-23 in passing for 147 yards. His leading receiver was Logan Reese whose one reception went for the 78 yard touchdown. Brodie Young led in total tackles with eight and Talon Smothers and Landon Utley had seven tackles each.
Three of Apollo’s touchdowns came on the ground. Donte Dixon scored two and finished the night with 79 yards on 16 carries and one rushing touchdown by Noah Rhinerson who had 117 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Christian Combs was 14-of-19 in passing for 220 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The receiving touchdown was scored by Evan Miller who had five receptions for 145 yards. The Eagles had 416 yards in total offense.
Apollo improves to 6-2. The Marshals are 2-6 and will play at Warren Central (0-7) on Friday.
