Marshall County will play in their fourth straight Region 1 Championship on Thursday against McCracken County. They advanced with a 6-0 win in Monday’s semi-final over St. Mary. The Mustangs beat Calloway County 3-1 to earn their spot in the championship.
It will be the third straight year the Marshals and Mustangs have met in the Region 1 title game. The two teams squared off once this season in late August with the Marshals shutting out the Mustangs 4-0.
Played on the artificial turf of Marquette Stadium, in what has become a routine start to many of the Marshals games of late, the first goal was scored less than four minutes in on a Collin Riley header with the assist to Jericho Evans. Zander Maxlow was credited with the second goal that deflected off a McCracken player for the 2-0 lead.
A goal by Jackson Boone followed by William Lynch with his 29th goal of the season on an assist from Eric Hicks made it a 4-0 game at halftime.
Riley opened the second half just like the first – scoring his second goal of the game off an assist from Boone. The final goal came from Tommy Robertson with three minutes left to complete the 6-0 shutout, their 12th of the season.
The Marshals had 12 shots on goal in the game while holding the Vikings to just two.
Thursday’s Region 1 Championship game at McCracken County starts at 6:00 p.m.
