Vernon Ray “Dip” Cates, age 90, of Sedalia, KY passed away Saturday October 2, 2021 at the Mills Health and Rehab in Mayfield, KY.
Mr. Cates taught and coached basketball at Lowes and Farmington High Schools before making a career at Air Products in Calvert City. He was a member and deacon of Sedalia Baptist Church and a charter member of the Sedalia Lions Club. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mary Sue Cates; two sons, Hal Cates of Mayfield, KY, and Mike (Jennifer) Cates of Sedalia, KY; one daughter, Beth Cates of Sedalia, KY; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Earl Cates; one grandson, Christopher Shayne Grogan and his parents, Dewey Vernon and Hettie Henson Cates.
A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 PM  Wednesday October 6, 2021 at the Yarbrough Cemetery in Sedalia, KY. Rev. Spence Pate will officiate. Ryan Cates, Matthew Grogan, Karson Cates, Dustin Young, Kyle Turner, and Coleman Amis will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM Wednesday October 6, 2021 at the Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield, KY
