Marshals beat Mayfield 2-1 in double overtime

Entering his sixth season as head coach at Mayfield, Luis Fabian has led the Cardinals to a probable  top contender in the Second District as was evidenced on Thursday in Mayfield when a goal in stoppage time sent the game into overtime tied 1-1.

Mayfield’s last and only ever win over the Marshals came in 2004 when they won 3-1 during the regular season and they came close to ending that 17 year drought on Thursday.

Senior Alex Sharverin on an assist from Zander Maxlow, scored a goal in the first half for the Marshals that held through stoppage time after the end of the second half when Mayfield senior Brian Hernandez tied the game with just seconds to go.

Still tied after the first sudden death overtime period, the game went into the second overtime and it looked like it might be decided on penalty kicks. Near the end of the four minute period, Kian Court found William Lynch for the game-winning goal.

Junior goalkeeper Blaise Grant, who left the game in the second half with an injury but returned for the overtime periods, had four saves in the win. Sophomore Steven Claborn, with his first varsity appearance, had three saves.

In post-game radio comments, Head Coach Bryan Blevins said it was not the same Mayfield team they are used to seeing – “Happy to get the win but we learned a lot about ourselves tonight.”

The Marshals will play two games in the Graves County Eagles Classic on Saturday. They will meet Henderson County first at 10:00 a.m. The Colonels are 2-0 with wins over Lyon County 11-1 and Caldwell County 8-5. The reigning Second Region champions fell to South Warren in last season’s opening round of the state tournament.

At 4:00 they will take on 1-1 Hopkins County Central, a 4-3 winner over University Heights in their season opener then fell 11-1 to Madisonville-North Hopkins.
