On August 2, 2021, at approximately 1:40 P.M., detectives with the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a drug investigation. Detectives attempted to arrest an unknown man, of Cairo, Illinois who was delivering a large quantity of Methamphetamine. The male had arrived at a hotel in the 5100 block of Cairo Road to deliver the Methamphetamine. After the male backed into a parking spot and stopped his vehicle, detectives attempted to keep the male from leaving by blocking him in with their vehicle. The male was able to avoid detective’s blocking efforts and fled in his vehicle.
The male exited the parking lot and drove West on Cairo Road. As detectives attempted to catch up to him, he began throwing items from his vehicle. Detectives later recovered a large amount of Crystal Methamphetamine that had been thrown from the vehicle. The male continued to flee West on Cairo Road as detectives continued to maintain visual contact as they drove through sparse traffic and into less populated areas. Detectives were able to determine that the male driver, and only occupant, was not the registered owner of the vehicle. As the fleeing suspect approached US60 on Cairo Road, detectives slowed their pursuit in an attempt to decrease the pressure on the suspect. As a detective rounded the curve approaching US60, he observed the suspect’s vehicle collide with a vehicle that was traveling Eastbound on US 60.
Detectives immediately began to determine the extent of the injuries of both the fleeing suspect and the driver of the Ford Explorer that the suspect struck.
Ultimately, life saving measures on the female driver of the Explorer were unsuccessful and she succumbed to her injuries.
The fleeing suspect was identified as Lamont X. Young of Cairo, Illinois. 27-year-old Lamont Young was taken by air ambulance to an out of state hospital due to the extent of his injuries. Young has an extensive criminal history including a conviction for Armed Robbery and arrests for Aggravated Battery, Home Invasion, and Murder.
Kentucky State Police responded to the intersection of Cairo Road and US60 to investigate the collision. Any further information regarding the collision will come from Kentucky State Police or in collaboration with Kentucky State Police. Detectives with the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their investigation regarding Young and illegal drug trafficking.
Our thoughts and prayers go out for all those affected.
