Mary Grace Thompson signed on Wednesday at Marshall County High School to continue her swimming and academic career at Transylvania University in Lexington and plans to pursue a degree in Business Management.
She has been an integral part of the Marshall County Swim Team for six years and her final high school meet on April 24 at the KHSAA State Swimming & Diving Championships capped off the most successful season and post season in school history. She placed fifth at one of four state regional meets at Union College in the 50 yard freestyle (25.70) which placed her 26th overall in the state and 27th in the state as a member of the 400 freestyle relay (3:54.59) after a sixth place finish at Union College.
Mary Grace set three individual team records during her career at Marshall County along with two record setting relays in the 2020-21 season. Her individual records came in the 50 yard freestyle (25.70), 100 yard freestyle (55.89) and 100 yards backstroke (1:08.11).
She was a key part of the record setting 200 freestyle relay (1:46.19) and swam the lead leg of the record setting 400 freestyle relay (3:54.59) with a split time of 55.89.
Her coaches said of Mary Grace that she set the standard for those to come in the program, praising her attitude, work ethic and leadership that led the Lady Marshals team to postseason state championships for the first time in school history. Her efforts combined with her passion for the sport earned her the opportunity to swim at the next level as part of the Transylvania University 2021-22 swim season.
“It was an honor and privilege to work with Mary Grace and we will all be watching her grow as she continues to pursue swimming outside of high school”, Head Coach Richard Tobergte said. “I am proud to be a small part of her success. Good luck in your future endeavors.”
