
Lyon County’s Travis Perry scored 34 points in the Lyons 86-56 win over Crittenden County on Tuesday which sent the freshman into the rarified air of achieving 2,000 career points. Perry has 542 points in the first 20 games and maintains an average of 27 points per game.
Improving to 17-3 after Tuesday’s win over Crittenden County, the Lyons have gone 3-2 over the last five games against some tough competition.
A trip to the All “A” Classic state tournament in Richmond ended in disappointment when the event was cancelled due to last week’s snow but they were fortunate to get a couple of games in before making the trip back to Eddyville. They picked up games against Region 8 All “A” Classic champion Walton-Verona Feb. 16 and Kentucky Country Day on Feb. 17.
The Lyons fell to Walton-Verona at Eastern Kentucky University 74-70. Leading scorers were Perry with 22, Jackson Shoulders 19 and 10 from Brady Shoulders. The following day against Kentucky Country Day, the Lyons won 91-58 behind four in double-figures – Perry 23, Jackson Shoulders 19, Brady Shoulders 18 and Nick Whalin with 12. Brady Shoulders led in 3-pointers with four, in free throws with 4/4 and pulled in 12 rebounds. Two players for Walton-Verona scored two-thirds of their points – Conner Davis 25 and Brant Smithers 23.
In the Independence Bank Classic at the Owensboro Sports Center on Saturday, the Lyons beat Daviess County 76-66, led by Perry’s 36 points. Jackson Shoulders added 13 and Jack Reddick scored 11. Perry was 14/19 from the floor, Reddick was 4/4 from the free throw line and Jackson Shoulders led in rebounds with 11.
A decision was made to go forward with the All “A” Classic using a sectional format, splitting the regions into four sections with the four teams out of each section advancing to Richmond for the semi-finals and finals on March 5-6.
Out of Regions 1-4, Lyon County drew Murray, falling in the first round to the Tigers 54-50. Perry led with 16 points while three for Murray finished in double-figures – Grant Whitaker 19, Trey Boggess 14 and Gabe Taylor 14. Tied 23-23 at halftime, Murray took a slight edge at 38-35 after three quarters and put the game away on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter.
The Lyons will meet McCracken County (14-4) on Thursday in Paducah. The Mustangs will be coming off a 64-62 overtime win over UHA on Tuesday.
