Marshall County and Owensboro Catholic were scheduled to play on Jan. 18 but that game fell victim to a COVID cancellation as was the case with the Lady Marshals game scheduled for today (Sat.) at Apollo.
“Getting to play today at home…we were supposed to be at Apollo today so excited about getting the game in before the weather hits”, Coach Aaron Beth said about getting the opportunity to play Owensboro Catholic on Saturday.
Owensboro Catholic added a game against Bardstown on Friday, falling 52-46 in overtime. A team the Lady Marshals beat by six last Saturday which Coach Beth commented, “They had to have played extremely well last night. Bardstown is by far the best team we’ve played all year.”
A dominant team in the 3rd Region over the past several years, the Lady Aces have won the region title the last three straight years, advancing to the Final Four of the 2019 KHSAA Girl’s Sweet Sixteen in 2018-19 and the Elite Eight round in 2017-18.
Led by Halle Langhi’s 16 points and Layne Pea with 12, the Lady Marshals won 56-42 to extend their win-streak to 13 and improve to 13-1.
Five of the Lady Marshals nine first quarter points belonged to Langhi and they led 9-4 heading into the second. Katie Riney’s 3-pointer for Owensboro Catholic cut the lead down to four at 11-7 and that’s as close as it would get. Another 3-pointer from Lexie Keelin to make it a 17-10 game was followed by a 9-0 run from the Lady Marshals that began on a 3-pointer by Pea and the half was finished off with a three from Jada Driver for a 31-11 lead.
The largest lead of the game came in the third quarter at 47-18 when a missed three by Driver was rebounded by Sophie Galloway who tossed it back to Driver for the lay-in.
A 47-22 lead going into the fourth was trimmed down to 14 points at the final buzzer, in part by the play of junior Kinsley Goetz who scored 16 of the Lady Aces 20 points in the quarter and they finished the game off on an 11-0 run.
“We were up 30 I think and I went ahead and subbed with five minutes to go”, Beth said. “I told them that Owensboro Catholic isn’t going to stop playing. We knew we were going to win the basketball game, and we got the win, but it is disappointing to end on such a sour note when we had played a great three and a half quarters.”
Weather permitting, the Lady Marshals are scheduled to play at Graves County on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles were scheduled to play Paducah Tilghman on Saturday evening but the game was cancelled due to Tilghman’s COVID quarantine. At 12-1, the Lady Eagles only loss was to the Lady Marshals on Jan. 29.
