PADUCAH, KY (Feb. 13, 2021)- – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 is preparing for another round of winter precipitation starting Sunday night.
Supervisors are attempting to give area snow-fighters some time off today and Sunday, while small teams continue working in many counties to replace worn plow blades and perform maintenance on trucks and other equipment. The goal is to have all equipment functioning at 100 percent in time for the next round expected to start Sunday night.
The District 1 Snow & Ice Team has developed some tentative plans that will likely be tweaked this afternoon when the snow accumulation forecast for Sunday night into Monday has been updated.
No pre-treating activities will be required this weekend. The heavy application of salt and other ice-fighting chemicals required to clear ice from roadways the last few days has left a salt residue on driving surfaces that will remain into the next winter event.
Crews worked with a sense of urgency Friday as they spread salt and other ice-fighting chemicals to get area highways as clear as possible while temperatures were in the mid-20s. With overnight lows creeping down into the low to mid-teens, ice-fighting chemicals lose their effectiveness.
KYTC engineers continue to remind everyone that extra caution is required during the extreme cold as something as simple as a dead battery can become life-threatening if you become stranded.
KYTC District 1 plans to provide an update on snow-fighting plans for Sunday and Monday later today.
