Marshals take district win over Calloway County

Finishing off the double-header with a district sweep on Homecoming, the Marshals beat Calloway County 69-61. After a first half of several ties and lead changes, Marshall County took a slight lead early in the second half and stretched it out to as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter for the eight point win.

Zion Harmon and Tyler Powell gave the Marshals an early 4-2 lead that went back to the Lakers on a three by Cade Butler. Harmon’s three and an assist to Tyler Stokes put them up 9-5 and they finished out with threes from Powell and Stokes to lead 15-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Kade Mize finished out the first quarter and opened the second with buckets for the Lakers which would be his four points in the game. Butler and Jarrett Darnell gave the Lakers a 17-15 lead, tied by Harmon then back to Calloway County on a basket by Chandler Steele.

The ties and lead changes continued with Powell tying it 19-19, Butler put the Lakers up 21-19, Stokes tied it 21-21, a three by Steele put Calloway up 24-21 and a three by Powell tied it yet again at 24-24. Ki Franklin put the Lakers up by two and a final three of the half from Stokes gave the Marshals a 27-26 halftime lead.

Butler opened the second half with a three to put the Lakers up by two, tied on free throws by Harmon. Nimmo’s 3-pointer that followed put the Marshals up 32-29 and it would be the last lead change of the game, the Marshals stretching their lead to 44-37 to end the third quarter.

Building on their lead in the fourth quarter behind points from Powell, Harmon and Stokes, the largest lead came at 57-46, but the Lakers kept coming at them with threes from Butler and Franklin and they closed to within four points at 62-58 with 1:22 remaining. The Marshals final seven points came at the free throw line in the 69-61 win.

Harmon had 22 points, Stokes 19 and Powell 15 to lead the Marshals. Butler led Calloway County with 22, Steele had 18 points and Ki Franklin 15. The Marshals improve to 12-9 and 2-0 in district play, the Lakers are 0-2 in the district and 13-8 overall.
