Lady Marshals hold off Calloway County 48-46

Halle Langhi, defended by Calloway County’s Charlee Settle, scored 18 points for the Lady Marshals in their 48-46 win.

A final shot at the buzzer by Calloway County missed the mark and the Lady Marshals came away with a 48-46 win to go to 2-0 in the district and improve to 11-8 on the season. The Lady Lakers are 1-1 in district play and 9-8 on the season. The two teams will meet again in Calloway County on Feb. 14.

Presley Jezik and Cayson Conner gave the Lady Marshals an early 4-0 lead before Calloway County tied it on a basket by Murray State bound Charlee Settle and free throws from seventh grader Skylar Waller. Three ties in the quarter and four lead changes led to a 16-13 lead for the Lady Marshals with Conner dropping in the final basket at the buzzer.

Marshall County held Calloway County to just two points in the second quarter, both on free throws by Settle who was also held to just four points in the first half. The Lady Marshals led 23-15 at halftime behind eight points from Halle Langhi and seven from Conner.

Conner and Langhi continued their defensive pressure on Settle who scored seven points for the Lady Lakers in the third quarter but also drew her third and fourth fouls. The Lady Marshals took a 34-30 lead into the fourth.

They stretched their lead to 41-32 in the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer by Mia Teague. Settle followed with five straight points to cut the lead back to four and with 3:45 remaining, the Lady Marshals holding a 43-42 lead. Elle Carson put the Lady Lakers on top by one and Langhi’s field goal quickly put the Lady Marshals back up by one at 45-44.

A free throw from Jada Driver was followed by free throws at the other end by Reese Settle and a 46-46 tie. Conner scored to put the Lady Marshals up 48-46 and with 10.2 seconds to go, a lost rebound gave Calloway County the ball whose last-ditch effort at the buzzer fell short.

Langhi led the Lady Marshals with 18 points and nine rebounds, Settle led the Lady Lakers with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
