Troopers Capture Marshall County Escapee

Benton, KY (December 30, 2019) — Kentucky State Police have charged a Louisville man with escape after fleeing from the Marshall County Jail. Just before 7:00 PM on December 29th, Trooper Nathaniel Day was arriving at Marshall County Detention Center with an arrestee. Upon exiting his patrol vehicle, Trooper Day was notified by detention center staff that an existing prisoner had just escaped from the rear of the detention center running toward Benton. Trooper Day immediately began searching the area and located the suspect in a nearby parking lot.

The suspect surrendered and was placed into custody. The escapee was identified as 30-year-old, Justin Smith, of Louisville. Smith has been incarcerated since 2016 for various charges out of Shelby County, Kentucky. Smith was charged with Escape 2nd Degree and Fleeing and Evading, 2nd Degree. He remained lodged in the Marshall County Detention Center.
