Lady Marshals beat Anna-Jonesboro in overtime

Looking to make it a Hoopfest sweep, the Marshall County girls tipped off at noon Saturday against Anna-Jonesboro (Ill.). The Lady Marshals won Thursday’s Hoopfest game, 70-49 over Russellville and would have to battle from behind most of the game against Anna-Jonesboro to tie the game 40-40 at the end of regulation, out-scoring the Lady Wildcats 8-2 in overtime to win 54-42.

The Lady Marshals scoring opened on two threes by Presley Jezik and Cayson Conner with another four points by Halle Langhi to lead 10-6. Anna-Jonesboro took a 18-12 lead on three straight threes from Jaley Watkins and two from Mikayla Bunden. Jezik’s three cut the lead to three before Kristen Edmonds basket at the buzzer put the Lady Wildcats up 20-15.

Both teams put up nine second quarter points, all nine for the Lady Marshals coming from Langhi who had 15 in the first half. The third quarter belonged to Cayson Conner who scored six of the Lady Marshals eight points and they trailed 38-32 heading into the final quarter.

Marshall County held Anna-Jonesboro to just two fourth quarter points to tie 40-40 and send the game into overtime.

Conner continued to control things for the Lady Marshals, scoring right after the overtime tip, dropping in a free throw then picking up a steal and scoring to put the Lady Marshals up 45-40 with 2:20 left in the four-minute overtime. Another Anna-Jonesboro turnover led to a foul on Jada Driver who converted the two free throws for a seven point lead with 1:47 left.

Langhi and Driver combined to put the Lady Marshals up 51-42 with 55 seconds left and a long pass down court to Conner who scored and completed the and-1 finished off the win.

Both Conner and Langhi had 19 points and nine rebounds each. Mikayla Bunden led Anna-Jonesboro with 11 points. The Lady Marshals are off to a 3-0 start and will host McCracken County on Friday in a double-header.
