Massac boys, Graves girls and Callaway, Miss., win on night one of Hoopfest

Massac County senior Zach Travis led the Patriots with 15 points in their 57-39 win in Thursday’s opening game of the Hoopfest. Travis was selected Most Valuable Player of the game.

The 2019 edition of the Marshall County Hoopfest got underway Thursday with four games starting with the Graves County Lady Eagles taking on Massac County’s Lady Patriots at 4:00, followed by the Graves County and Massac County boy’s game. Marshall County’s Lady Marshals played Russellville in game three and the final game was between Calloway (Jackson, Miss.) and Lausanne Collegiate (Memphis, Tenn.).

Massac County took control early over Graves County, leading 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and out-scored the Eagles 18-5 in the second to lead 32-13 at halftime. The Eagles stepped it up offensively in the second half, out-scoring the Patriots 26-25 but the first half deficit was too much to overcome, falling to Massac County 57-39.

Graves County senior, Raychel Mathis, guarded by Massac County’s Ellie Carter, led the Lady Eagles with 17 points in their win, earning game MVP honors.

Graves County’s Raychel Mathis led all scorers with 17 points in the Lady Eagles 41-27 win over Massac County. Massac County led by two points at the end of the first quarter, but trailed 23-19 at halftime. The Lady Eagles out-scored the Lady Patriots 18-8 in the second half and held them to just one point the entire fourth quarter.

Graves County beat Massac County just two days earlier, in the Lady Eagles season-opener, winning 59-49. Brandon Fisher, former Marshall County boy’s assistant coach, is in his first season as head coach at Graves County.

The final game of the night featured Lausanne Collegiate (Memphis) and junior Rivals #7 player Moussa Cisse who has the interest of UK Head Coach John Calipari who was on hand for the game along with Assistant Coach Tony Barbee as well as Evansville Head Coach Walter McCarty. Cisse has many offers already that include Kentucky, UConn, Michigan, Ole Miss and UCLA to name just a few.

Lausanne Collegiate played Callaway (Jackson, Miss.) and top ranked Class of 2021 player Daeshun Ruffin, who also has several offers that include Auburn, Alabama, LSU and Mississippi State. Ruffin knocked down 37 points in their 65-44 win over Lausanne and earned MVP honors. Callaway led 30-25 at halftime and out-scored Lausanne 35-19 in the second half. Cisse led Lausanne with 14 points and nine rebounds.
