Lady Marshals Head Coach Dan Langhi said he was most proud of the way his team finished the game, in Friday’s 46-32 win over Calloway County. In their first meeting of the season on Jan. 4 at Calloway County, the Lady Marshals kept it close but trailed the majority of the game with the Lady Lakers pulling out the 46-45 win.
The two teams will meet again in the first round of the district tournament, and it will be played on Calloway County’s home court. Langhi feels his team’s strength of schedule has helped to prepare them for what he hopes is their best basketball coming at the end of the season.

“Sad thing about it, is that three of the top four teams in the region are in our district and one of them is not going to make it, but at the same time that’s what makes it exciting”, Langhi said. “We’ve got to be ready to play. I’ve been telling them the most important game is next Tuesday. All the traveling we did, all the preparation and the hard work we’ve put in, you’ve got to be ready for that game.”
Calloway County jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Marshall County got on the board on a 3-pointer by Presley Jezik. A basket by Tera Colson pulled the Lady Marshals to within one point at 9-8 which was followed by Charlee Settle’s first points of the game late in the first quarter for an 11-8 lead before Jezik cut it to one at the end of the quarter.
Adison Hicks buried a three to open the second quarter for the Lady Lakers and extend their lead to four points. Free throws by Cayson Conner, a steal by Colson which led to a free throw and basket by Halle Langhi gave the Lady Marshals their first lead of the game at 15-14 at the halfway point of the quarter. Five more points from a free throw by Layne Pea, and baskets by Lorin Powell and a final basket of the half by Pea gave Marshall County a 20-16 halftime lead.
The Lady Marshals pressure on Settle held her to just four first half points, but she went on to score all 16 of Calloway County’s second half points on her way to 20 in the game. She wasted no time right out of the half, scoring a quick seven points for her team to take the lead at 23-22. Powell scored to put the Lady Marshals up by one followed by two straight threes from Pea to put them back up by seven.
Settle cut the lead back to four points on a 3-pointer, backing that up with another basket to cut the lead to two. Langhi, Conner and Powell scored the final five points of the third quarter for a 35-28 Marshall County lead. They went on to take a 41-28 lead in the fourth quarter and with just over two minutes to go and still holding a 13-point lead, the Lady Marshals began to take time off the clock and took their largest lead of 16 points after a three-point play by Conner. Settle closed out the half with two free throws for Calloway County in their 14-point loss.
Settle’s 20 points led all scorers. Powell led Marshall County with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Marshals improve to 19-7, the loss moves Calloway County to 21-7.
