Lady Marshals fall to Calloway County 46-45

The Lady Marshals lost to Calloway County by one point Friday, a game that was a good indication of another hotly contested  chase for the number one seed in the girl’s 4th District. Led by 17 points from junior Charlee Settle, the Lady Lakers won 46-45 leading the majority of the game with the Lady Marshals nipping at their heals throughout.

Cayson Conner, defended by Charlee Settle, led the Lady Marshals with 14 points.

Tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter, Calloway County took a seven point lead at halftime, led by Settle who finished off the first half with a couple of free throws to take a 24-17 lead. Halle Langhi led with nine points for the Lady Marshals in the first half, Settle had 11 for the Lady Lakers.

Behind seven third quarter points from Cayson Conner, the Lady Marshals out-scored Calloway County by two points to cut the lead to five. An opening fourth quarter basket by Lorin Powell cut the Calloway led to 35-32 and they would cut it to two points with just under four minutes to go on a great put-back by Powell.

Powell followed that up with another basket that tied the game at 42-42 and Marshall County took a two-point lead on free throws by Conner with 2:19 remaining in the game. A 3-pointer from Keeli Puckett put Calloway back up by one point with 49 seconds remaining.

The Lady Marshals turned the ball over and committed a foul with 11.9 seconds to go, sending Elle Carson to the line and she made one free throw to put the Lady Lakers up by two points.

With 5.8 seconds on the clock, Tera Colson was fouled and made the second of two free throws to cut the Calloway County lead to one, but time ran out on the Lady Marshals effort in their one-point loss.

Conner led Marshall County with 14 points. The loss was just the third of the season for the Lady Marshals who are 12-3, Calloway County improves to 12-2. The Lady Marshals will play their next game at home on Jan. 8 against Paducah Tilghman.
