On Monday, October 08, 2018, the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department was made aware of another mail scam that has appeared in Western Kentucky.
In this particular incident, an individual received an unassuming envelope in his mail that contained a letter and a check. The letter claimed to be a representative from an international sweepstakes company informing the recipient of a prize winning. The letter instructed the individual to deposit the check into their account to cover transaction costs associated with receiving the sweepstakes winnings, while returning a portion of the funds back to the sweepstakes company. This particular check was made to appear for the account of a machine shop located in Texas and was determined to be forged.
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind everyone to be aware of instances such as the one depicted. Please be leery of any unsolicited funds received from unknown parties, as well as any type of instruction to return a portion of the funds to an unknown party, as they are most always scam related.
