A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to start work along the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass/Dick Castleman Expressway on Friday, August 17, 2018, that will include a closure of the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass on Saturday and Sunday, August 18 & 19, 2018.
This is part of an ongoing multi-step microsurfacing process along an extended section of KY 121 through Graves County and Carlisle County.
On Friday, August 16th, the contractor will start work along the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass under one lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers. The work zone lane restrictions along the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass will be active from 9:00 a.m., CDT, to about 3:00 p.m., on Friday.
The contractor then plans to close the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass/Dick Castleman Expressway to all traffic around Mayfield from the KY 80 intersection extending northward to US 45 from 7:00 a.m., CDT, to 7:00 p.m., on both Saturday and Sunday, August 18 & 19. During this Saturday and Sunday closure KY 121 Mayfield Bypass traffic will detour along KY 121-Business through Mayfield.
KY 58/East Broadway and KY 464/Backusburg Road, as well as streets that cross the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass, will remain open at the crossing points with flaggers controlling traffic while the contractor is working within the intersections. Businesses will be able to maintain access via side streets.
Message boards will be placed at key locations to help direct traffic to the detour along KY 121-Business through Mayfield during this closure of the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass.
This closure of the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass on Saturday and Sunday will allow the contractor to complete work more quickly and reduce weekday disruptions to school bus traffic and commuters. Approximately 12,000 vehicles travel the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass in an average day.
On Monday, August 20th, the contractor will return to daytime work zone lane restrictions along the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass with alternating flow controlled by flaggers. The work zone will be active from 9:00 a.m., CDT, to about 3:00 p.m., on weekdays until completed.
During the work zone lane restrictions on Friday and Monday motorists should consider taking an alternate route to avoid possible delays. Motorists should be aware of heavier than normal traffic flow along KY 121-Business through Mayfield during this work.
Microsurfacing along the KY 121 Mayfield Bypass is scheduled on a weather permitting basis.
This is part of a microsurfacing project that runs along KY 121 from the Kess Creek Bridge near the KY 80 intersection in Mayfield extending northward along KY 121 through Graves County and Carlisle County to the Carlisle-Ballard County Line, a distance of about 27 miles. A few sections of KY 121 along the project area with newer pavement are excluded from the work.
Motorists should be aware that during some of the phases of the microsurfacing process they will encounter fine loose gravel along the roadway. Appropriate caution is required. After allowing the various phases of coating process to cure, the contractor will come back with a final cape seal that will provide a driving surface similar to regular asphalt pavement.
Strawser Construction Company is the prime contractor on this $1,622,602 highway improvement project.
This microsurfacing project is part of a statewide effort to extend pavement life. The multi-phase microsurfacing process is an industrial strength enhanced version of the seal coating used on some driveways.
