The Homeplace 1850s Working Farm is hosting their annual Spring Quilting Bee, April 21 – 22, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.
Visitors will learn about how quilts were made in the 19th century, and get the chance to add a few stitches to one of our quilts; our new “fancy” quilt the double Irish chain, our “plain” pinwheel quilt, or the quilted petticoat. Programs included with general admission; ages 13 and up $5, ages 5-12 $3, and ages 4 and under free.
“We will be celebrating the Homeplace’s 40th anniversary this year, and the double pen house will feature a display of quilts made on the farm by the quilters and interpreters from the early years of the Homeplace.” said Cindy Earls, lead interpreter. “There will be opportunities to try your hand at applique quilting; a technique used on fancy quilts, children can also practice with sewing cards. There will also be popular 1850s quilt patterns available for you to take home.”
If you are new to quilting you can purchase a Homeplace quilt kit featuring reproduction 19th century fabric, at the Homeplace gift shop. Bring it out on the farm to learn how to hand sew the quilt square and begin your quilting obsession.
