Marshall County students participating in National School Walkout Day will have a safe area for observance.

Superintendent Trent Lovett said via email Tuesday night that some Marshall County students will be taking part in the Students for Student Safety Sit-In at the Capitol today. The district has also made plans for those staying in Marshall County to recognize victims of school shootings.

“We have a large group of students that will be traveling to Frankfort for a sit in,” Lovett said. “If we have others who choose to walk out, we have a secured area where this will take place.”

On Tuesday, parents with students in Graves County said they had been notified by the district there that students were planning to walk out at 10 a.m. Other media reported Tuesday night that districts in McCracken and Calloway counties were preparing for observances.

Schools across the country were preparing for the walkout earlier this week, with many students planning to stop the day for 19 minutes in observance for the victims of school shootings in Marshall County and Parkland, Florida.
