Motorists Urged to be Alert for Hazards Created by Potholes & Flooded Roadways

Weather and rising floodwaters are expected to create some unusually hazardous
driving conditions over the next couple of weeks.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Crews have made a super-human effort to patch as
many potholes as possible during the dry sunny weather the last few days.

Much of that effort may disappear as rain returns to the region on Wednesday and
Thursday. While only about an inch of rain is expected across most of the region,
it will be enough to soak into potholes, loosen asphalt patching material, and allow
potholes to reappear.

The rain will also serve to cover potholes, making them harder for motorists to spot
and dodge on their daily commute.

KY Highway Crews will be back out on the road on patching duty after the rain moves
through.

Motorists are urged to slow down and use extra caution as potholes are expected to
continue to be a problem until drier weather helps crews to get the upper hand in
the ongoing battle.

Meanwhile, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is also urging motorists to use extra
caution as floodwaters continue to cover many area highways into next week.
Statewide, 124 highway segments were reported covered with floodwaters this week.
US 60 between Henderson and Owensboro is among one of the more significant closures
on that list.

River levels in some areas along the Ohio River and tributaries are expected to
crest in the next few days, then remain at high levels over the next week or longer.
Flooded roadways may force some commuters to move to alternate routes where they
aren’t familiar with driving conditions.

When you encounter a flooded roadway remember to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Report
flooded areas that aren’t marked by signs to your local 911 call center with the
route number and name and a nearby landmark.
