Student accused of shooting to remain in custody

Marshall County Assistant Attorney Jason Darnall, read a prepared statement outside of the courtroom at the Marshall County Judicial Building. Darnall was joined by County Attorney Jeff Edwards.

Darnall stated that following the teen’s first hearing, the 15-year-old accused defendant was ordered to be detained which will be taken care of by the Department of Juvenile Justice. The case, in which they are requesting he be tried as an adult, will be transferred to Marshall County Circuit Court and a hearing of their request will be heard at a later date.

The accused is being charged with two counts murder and 12 counts of assault first degree following the Jan. 23 shooting at Marshall County High School.

“To the staff, teachers and administration of Marshall County High School, we commend you for your heroic actions in the face of these events”, Darnall said. “By all accounts, you did your jobs exactly as trained to get kids to safety and to reunite families.”

Darnall also praised the first responders whose professionalism he said was “above reproach”. Darnall went on to say that they are here to help in any way they can.

No questions were taken following Darnall’s statement.
