The Kentucky Nurses Association is extremely saddened by the tragedy of the school shooting at
Marshall County High School and the injuries and deaths that resulted.
We call on all nurses in Marshall County to support the students, families, faculty, and staff. We ask
that nurses with psychiatric backgrounds offer support directly to the school. The Kentucky Nurses
Association unequivocally knows that when Kentucky has a full-time nurse in every school, nurses can
provide ongoing support for students and families and lessen the likelihood of school violence.
School nursing is a specialized practice of public health nursing that:
• Provides quality healthcare and intervenes with actual and potential physical and mental health
problems
• Promotes healthier lives and improves children’s learning
• Promotes healthy behaviors such as physical, psychosocial, and mental health
• Advances academic success and improves attendance rates
• Provides a safe place for children to share confidential health information and concerns
We, at the Kentucky Nurses Association, believe in working for a healthier society for all Kentuckians.
We will continue to keep Marshall County High School, the Marshall County community, and our state in our thoughts during this difficult time.
