Owensboro Catholic tops Lady Marshals in commanding second half

Cayson Conner, pictured here in Friday’s game against Calloway County, led the Lady Marshals in scoring against Owensboro Catholic with 10 points.

Owensboro Catholic, a Region 3 pre-season favorite, handed the Lady Marshals a tough loss yesterday in Owensboro. Owensboro was led by their three pre-season top 10 players, junior Sarah Clemens with 14 points, senior Ellie Mitchell with 14 points and junior Mackenzie Keelin with 13 points in their 53-21 win to improve their record to 12-3.

Cayson Conner led the Lady Marshals with 10 points, five of those in the first quarter that cut the Lady Aces lead to 9-7. That would be as close as they would get the remainder of the game, trailing 18-9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Marshals held Owensboro Catholic to just eight second quarter points while scoring seven, four by Lorin Powell and a three from Tera Colson, to keep within reach, trailing 28-16 at halftime.

The size advantage of the Lady Aces took its toll in the second half, out-scoring the Lady Marshals 25-5, holding them to just two third quarter points and three points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Marshals and Marshals will play a double-header Tuesday at Paducah Tilghman.
