A local ministry is working to ensure residents have what they need to remain warm this winter.
The 2nd Chance by Mercy community ministry will host a coat and blanket giveaway today, Saturday, Jan. 6. According to the group’s social media the event will begin at noon and continue until supplies are gone. Items will be given free of charge at the 2nd Chance by Mercy building at 1202 Main St. in Benton.
The ministry group works to coordinate community efforts for those in need. Previously, volunteers have been responsible for constructing and placing mini food pantries – boxes that community members stock with non-perishable food items that needy residents may take as needed – throughout various locations in the county. Volunteers also operate the clothing closet with clothing, food and hygiene items available to residents who need them.
The clothing closet is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday, and once monthly on Saturday.
“I want people to know that we are here to help anyone,” organization founder Rachel Lane said in a previous interview. “We’re not here to judge; we’re not here to ask questions. We are here to help anyone that is in need. The women that are in this ministry now, their heart is just so big for it. We’re doing our best to reach out to people, and we just want people to start coming to us – we’re here. We’ll do anything that we can. If we don’t have the resources for it, we’ll find it.”
