Secretary of State encouraging eligible Kentuckians to register to vote on National Voter Registration Day

FRANKFORT, KY – Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is encouraging eligible Kentuckians to register to vote or check and make updates to their voter registration information as states celebrate National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday.

The process to register or make registration updates is easy with Kentucky’s one-stop elections portal, GoVoteKY.com. Grimes launched the online voter registration system last year and then embarked on a statewide voter registration drive resulting in more than 100,000 new voters.

“Our work didn’t end last year with our successful and historic #GoVoteKY campaign. There’s always more to do make sure every eligible Kentuckian is ready to vote. We’re more than 200 days away from the next time the polls open in Kentucky, but National Voter Registration Day is still a great reminder for folks to make sure they’re registered or make any necessary changes to their registration,” said Grimes. “And it’s a perfect day for young people who will be first-time voters next year to celebrate democracy and register to vote.”

Kentuckians who are 17 but will be 18 years old on or before the general election on Nov. 6, 2018, are eligible to register.

As a nonpartisan “holiday” for democracy, National Voter Registration Day counts on thousands of partners and volunteers across the political spectrum. Started in 2012 for the presidential election, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote.

“Our voting rights are sacred, but too many eligible Kentuckians aren’t able to exercise their right because they aren’t registered. National Voter Registration Day is the day to change that – to go to GoVoteKY.com or visit your county clerk to sign up to vote, then turn out and make your voice heard in our state and local elections next year,” Grimes said.
