Lady Marshals earn big district win over Murray

Loralei Samson controlling the ball for the Lady Marshals, scored the final goal in their 4-2 win over Murray.

The last win for the Lady Marshals over Murray came on October 22, 2014 when they beat them 3-1 to win the 1st Region Tournament. Since that night, Murray has won the last four meetings between the 2nd District rivals until Tuesday at Colburn Stadium.

The Lady Marshals beat the Lady Tigers 4-2, out shooting them 24-18, a physical game that resulted in three yellow cards on Murray.

“Very proud of them and they’re effort…their grit…I love teams with grit and determination”, Head Coach Michael Boone said. “This team plays for each other…they have great camaraderie.”

Murray struck first seven minutes into the game with a goal by Kess Kelly off a corner kick, tied less than three minutes later on a goal by Camryn Crass from Carmen Gunn. Lydia Grogan finds the net at 28:00 in the first half to put the Lady Tigers back up 2-1.

Carmen Gunn, getting past Murray’s Hannah Lawson, tied the game with a goal less than five minutes into the second half.

A shot on goal by Grogan again just seconds later was deflected nicely up and over the goal by Carlen Whirley. Gunn with a chance to tie the game at 16:36 dribbling the ball to the goal, stopped short by Murray keeper Sydney Reid and Murray held on to their 2-1 lead until halftime.

In the second half, Gunn challenged the Murray goalkeeper, slipping the ball past her and scoring to tie the game 2-2 and for the next 26 minutes, neither team could find the net. Control of the game heavily in the Lady Marshals favor late in the second half, Kylee Crass scored with 8:23 remaining for a 3-2 lead and the clincher goal came at 4:51 from Loralei Sampson.

Boone was proud of the effort of his players front to back and thought their fitness level was a factor in the second half. He told them to enjoy the win but don’t let this be the pinnacle of the season.

“We need to improve and get better in many ways…we allowed two goals off of two corners…we just can’t do that”, Boone said.

Whirley had seven saves and Reid had 12 for Murray.

They improve their record to 5-2-1, following a 2-2 tie on Saturday against the unbeaten Henderson County. Henderson County scored both goals in the first half by Maddie Griggs while both Lady Marshal goals came in the second half from Kylee Crass and Bailey Wood. The Lady Colonels out shot the Lady Marshals 19-10, Whirley had eight saves and Henderson County had seven.

The Lady Marshals next game will be Tuesday, September 5th at home against Hopkinsville with a JV game at 5:30. The JV squad won the earlier game Tuesday against Murray 2-1.
