Calloway County handed the Marshals their first loss of the season Thursday and first 2nd District loss. The Lakers scored first, 24 minutes into the game on a goal by Christian Adams. Adams got loose a few more times but Marshals defenders were there to cover, keeping it a 1-0 game at halftime.
A goal by Daniel Gardner tied the game 1-1 at 27:58 in the second half but the Lakers took back the lead with 12 minutes left on a goal by Ty Stom on a rebound off of Marshal’s goal keeper Tyler Belcher.
Just seconds later, Calloway County struck again, getting a goal by Christian Adams in what most in the stadium thought should have been an off sides on Adams, but the goal stood and the Lakers held on for the 3-1 win.
“I don’t want to take anything away from them, they were a worthy opponent, they made the plays when they needed to”, Coach Donnie Heath said. “But we had opportunities that we could have capitalized on as well. I believe we came out a little timid and I was not happy about that, but we fixed that and made a few adjustments.”
Heath liked what he saw the first 10 to 15 minutes of the second half and was happy with his players mindset and attitude.
“I know the score line may not indicate that but as a staff we are extremely proud of our boys”, Heath said. “We found a way to stay in the game…a couple calls here and there…but that’s going to happen and we have to find a way to deal with that.”
The Marshals had seven shots in the game, three on goal, four corners, one card and seven saves by Belcher. Calloway County had 23 shots, 10 on goal, five corners, one card and three saves by Aaron Dawson.
They will play at McCracken County (4-0), the Region One favorite, on Tuesday starting with the JV game at 5:30.
