The Hugs project of western Kentucky is advising of a potential scam, in which the perpetrator is soliciting funds under the nonprofit’s name.

According to a statement from Hugs project President Gayron Ferguson, an unknown caller is phoning residents requesting donations for the Hugs project. The caller is allegedly asking for credit card information over the phone.

“We do not do this,” Ferguson stated in an email to Marshall County Daily. “We have not authorized anyone to do this on our behalf. … This is a scam, and someone is trying to use our good name and what we do for our troops to steal from people.”

Ferguson advised residents who receive such a call to immediately notify authorities. Residents should never give credit card or personal information over the phone.

The Hugs project of western Kentucky is a volunteer organization providing care packages and other services to troops stationed overseas.
