Benton Police Department Chief Tracy Watwood announced his retirement Friday afternoon, via the department’s Facebook page.

Watwood has been with law enforcement for 24 years, first in Ballard County and then in Benton. He was named BPD chief in 2009.

“I would like to thank the Benton Police Department for the great job that they will continue to do safeguarding the public,” Watwood said in his online release. “The past and present officers of the Benton Police Department have touched my life in many different ways.”

Watwood also expressed his gratitude for Benton residents’ support for both he and fellow officers throughout the years.

“I want to assure you that this department and the ideals it represents will be in good hands,” Watwood added. “I will be forever grateful.”

Watwood’s retirement will become effective July 31.
