A Marshall County grand jury has indicted a local man accused of aiming a loaded firearm at sheriff’s deputies.
Elvis Ray Stevenson, 64, of Calvert City, was indicted on felony first-degree wanton endangerment – police officer – Tuesday; Stevenson was also indicted on misdemeanor charges of third-degree terroristic threatening, fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest.
The charges stem from an incident May 23, during which Marshall County Sheriff’s Sgt. Eddie McGuire reportedly fired shots on Stevenson after he allegedly took aim on him.
MCSD reports say about 3 p.m. May 23, deputies responded to a residence on Dees Lane in Calvert City in reference to a disturbance between two brothers-in-law. Reports say Stevenson assaulted a neighbor and his brother-in-law, and had left the premises to retrieve a firearm from his home. Stevenson had allegedly threatened to shoot the victims.
Upon arrival, McGuire reportedly observed Stevenson return to the scene on a 4-wheeler with a firearm. Police say McGuire ordered Stevenson to stop and show his hands, but he did not comply.
Stevenson then reportedly revved the engine of his ATV and drove toward McGuire. Reports say he drove past the officer and stopped before he jumped off the vehicle and pointed the gun at McGuire.
MCSD reports say McGuire then fired two rounds. One of those shots reportedly struck a house trailer and then fragmented, hitting Stevenson in the arm.
Stevenson was treated at Marshall County Hospital before being released to police. He was taken to Marshall County Detention Center, where he later posted $50,000 bond, according to court documents.
McGuire was placed on paid administrative leave following the incident until the investigation was completed. He has since returned to duty.
Stevenson is scheduled to appear for review at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8 in Marshall County Circuit Court.
