Two arrested with stolen merchandise after leaving scene of wreck

A Benton man was one of two arrested after leaving the scene of an accident Friday in Calloway County.

According to a Calloway County Sheriff’s Office release, deputies responded about 12:30 p.m. Friday to an injury accident north of Murray, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 641 and Almo Road. One of the vehicles allegedly left the scene of the accident immediately.

About two hours later, the vehicle was seen near the intersection of U.S. 641 and Ky. Hwy. 80. Deputies stopped the vehicle and talked to two occupants; both allegedly told police they were not driving the car at the time of the accident.

Police reportedly discovered stolen merchandise from both the Benton and Murray Walmart stores in the car with the occupants, according to the release. A small amount of crushed up prescription medication was allegedly found in the car, as well.

Police arrested Austin R. Estes, 19, of Benton, on suspicion of driving on a DUI suspended license (first offense, aggravated); leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid or assistance; failure of owner to maintain required insurance, first offense; and receiving stolen property under $10,000.

Trent L. Felske, 26, of Murray, was arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property under $10,000 and first-degree possession of a controlled substance (opiates), first offense.

Both were taken to the Calloway County Detention Center in Murray.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The driver of the other vehicle, Katelyn A. Shainkle, 22 of Murray suffered minor injuries. She was taken to Murray Calloway County Hospital, where she was treated and released.

The Calloway County Sheriff’s Office, Calloway County Fire Rescue and the Murray Calloway County Hospital Ambulance Service responded to the accident.
