A Benton man accused of supplying drugs that led to the death of a Calvert City man in March entered a not guilty plea Thursday during an arraignment in Marshall County Circuit Court.
Jevan Sheppard, 24, of Benton, faces charges of trafficking in synthetic drugs and firearm enhanced trafficking in synthetic drugs. Police believe Sheppard supplied U4 – commonly known as “Pink” – to Thomas Hardin of Calvert City, who then distributed the drugs to brothers Karson and Taylor May of Calvert City.
The two overdosed on the substance, according to previous reports, on March 14 at their residence in Calvert City. Taylor May, 23, died at the scene; 18-year-old Karson May suffered serious injuries as a result.
Sheppard was arrested on March 22, after police reportedly executed a search warrant at Sheppard’s residence in Benton and seized quantities of the drug in powder form, packaged for sale. Other drugs, a scale, ledger and loaded firearms were reportedly discovered at the home, as well.
He was taken to Marshall County Jail, where he remains on a $100,000 cash bond.
Gary Haverstock, Sheppard’s attorney, moved for a bond reduction in the case.
“Jevan is 24 years old and has no criminal record whatsoever,” Haverstock said. “He’s been a law-abiding citizen of Marshall County. He is home-schooled, has a high school diploma. He has the opportunity to work in his father’s business where he was working prior to his arrest, your honor.”
Commonwealth’s Attorney Mark Blankenship opposed the motion, arguing Sheppard remained a danger to the community.
“We have no assurance he wouldn’t get right back out into that,” Blankenship said. “He transfers drugs like that to anybody, he could kill them. He can stay right where he is.”
Circuit Court Judge James Jameson will consider the motion and issue an order at a later date.
