LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES, KY/TN – November 10, 2016 – Beginning Friday, November 11, at 8am, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area will begin fire restrictions due to severe drought conditions and increasing fire danger.
The Stage 1 Fire Restriction includes:
- Limiting campfires to Forest Service designated campgrounds and picnic areas where grills and metal fire rings are provided.
- Smoking only in vehicles or buildings, in developed recreation sites, or in areas cleared at least three feet in diameter of all flammable material.
- Possessing, discharging or using any kind of fire work or other pyrotechnic device is prohibited.
- Gas and propane stoves, lanterns or heating devices are permitted if such devices meet the fire underwriter’s specifications for safety.
“Fire Restrictions come in different stages and become more prohibitive with each stage,” says Todd Lerke, Fire Management Officer at Land Between the Lakes. “Most forests begin by implementing a Stage 1 Restriction. If conditions worsen, a Stage 2 Restriction is implemented. When conditions worsen, a forest closure is usually the next step, which means the public is not allowed to enter the boundaries of the national forest due to the danger.”
“Land Between the Lakes belongs to everyone,” says Duane Cameron, Law Enforcement Patrol Captain at Land Between the Lakes. “Please help us protect these valuable resources. If you see someone acting carelessly, please contact 9-1-1 or Forest Service Law Enforcement at 877-861-2457.”
People in violation of these restrictions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations and/or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months.
