A contractor for The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans a temporary detour and traffic shift for westbound traffic along Interstate 24 at the Exit 25 Purchase Parkway Interchange during the overnight hours of Thursday, October 6, 2016. Starting at 10 p.m., on Thursday, the westbound lanes of I-24 will be closed between Exit 27 and Exit 25. During the closure, westbound traffic will be detoured via US 62 westbound and the Purchase Parkway southbound to reconnect to the westbound lanes of I-24. Message boards will be set up to direct traffic and law enforcement will assist with this overnight detour. The contractor will use the overnight detour to complete final connections and traffic control for a long-term traffic diversion along the I-24 westbound lanes in the work zone. Westbound I-24 traffic will be shifted to the diversion at a point immediately west of the US 62 Exit 27 interchange starting around 5 a.m., CDT, Friday. This diversion runs along the north side of the existing I-24 westbound lanes to the Exit 25 Purchase Parkway interchange. Motorists should use extra caution and be prepared to encounter changes in traffic flow this diversion will create through the work zone. Once westbound traffic is shifted to the diversion on Friday morning, traffic will be allowed to run on this new configuration for about a week. The contractor will then set a date for an eastbound traffic shift to help facilitate ongoing reconstruction of the interchange. This work zone along I-24 in Marshall County between the 25 and 28 mile marker is to allow the I-24/Purchase Parkway Interchange to be upgraded so I-69 can be extended southward along the parkway. This work zone includes a 55 mile per hour speed limit with an enhanced enforcement presence and double fines for citations. Jim Smith Contracting of Grand Rivers is the prime contractor on the $37.8 million interchange reconstruction project. The new I-24/I-69 C interchange at Calvert City has a target completion date of July 1, 2018. All work schedules are subject to change due to weather, emergencies, and other factors.
