Mayfield ends Marshals season in 4-3 walk-off win

PADUCAH – Mayfield, the only team in the tournament with a losing record, seems to be the Cinderella team after their 10-inning 4-3 win over Tilghman and walk-off 4-3 win over the Marshals in Tuesday’s semi final to advance to play McCracken County in tonight’s Region 1 Championship, their first trip to the title game since the 2011 season when they beat Calloway County 4-3, a score that keeps making an appearance when their season is on the line.

Cole Griggs hit an RBI double to left field to give the Marshals an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning in their semi-final game Tuesday against Mayfield.

Mayfield took the lead in the bottom of the 4th on an RBI single by Jaden Stinson and sacrifice hit by Ian Sevic but the Marshals would tie the game in the top of the 6th when Jackson Beal reached on an error that scored Griggs.

The Marshals took the lead in the top of the 7th that began on a double by Lucas Forsythe and single by Cody Clark. Justice Beal reached on a fielder’s choice sending Forsythe in for the run and a 3-2 ballgame. Justice Beal stole 2nd and advanced to 3rd on an error but was tagged out sliding into home for the 2nd out of the inning and two were left stranded on base with the 3rd out.

Mayfield loaded the bases with their first three up on singles by Husten Lancalter, Lane Kennemore and Conner Guthrie, scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice then the run for the walk-off win scored by Kennemore as runners advanced and Stinson reached on a fielder’s choice.

J.C. Goins struck out 3, walked 3 and allowed 9 hits on the mound for the Marshals while Nick Workman took the win in 7 innings of work, striking out 5, walking 3 and allowing 8 hits.

The Marshals end the 2016 season with a record of 20-15.
