The future did not look promising for little 4 year old Jasmine Bivin Wilson in 1986 when she was struck with a spinal condition that put her in a wheelchair for life. Unable to attend school, she was educated at home. But she discovered what really counts – she built her life on “things eternal.” She became a hymn writer and in her lifetime wrote hundreds of songs. She became known as “The Fannie Crosby of the West.” A hymn Miss Wilson wrote so many years ago is desperately needed by our rapidly changing society today.
“Time is filled with swift transitions naught of earth unmoved shall stand . Build your hopes on things eternal, hold to God’s unchanging hand.”
Times are changing! Rapidly changing! Rapid change in technology, the breakup of families and the slide of our culture into and immoral cesspool has left many wondering how much further can it go? The swift transitions of life are becoming swifter. “Naught on earth unmoved shall stand. Scriptures tell us that everything that can be shaken will be shaken. When we see governments, economies, and things we counted dear, even over freedoms, being shaken people fall into worry and fear.
What is our answer? “Build your hopes on things eternal!” Jesus told us that two men built houses – one on sand the other on solid rock. Storms hit both houses, the one on the rock stood and the one built on sand fell. Jesus is the solid rock! He is building a Kingdom that cannot be moved! In this shaking uncertain world, we must build our hopes on things eternal – Jesus and His Kingdom! Miss Wilson wrote, “Hold to God’s unchanging hand.” Good advice! Even better put your complete trust in Jesus as He holds to your hand.
What really matters? Most of the things we worry and fret about are temporary and are fading away. What really matters – things eternal! “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, all these things will be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
