MAYFIELD – With the exception of the opening basket by Mayfield’s Noel Roman, the Marshals led all of the first half before a disastrous 3rd quarter led to their eventual 60-48 loss to the Cardinals.

“I’m frustrated, I know they’re frustrated”, Head Coach Gus Gillespie said. “We really looked good in practice but came over here and didn’t get much done for a half of basketball.”

Dylan Walters scored the Marshals first five points for an early 5-2 lead, hanging on to lead 10-9 at the end of the 1st quarter with Mayfield closing it out on a basket and free throw by freshman Kent Trey Matthews who scored 16 points in the Cardinals win.

Matthew French scored the Marshals first basket of the 2nd quarter followed by a three from Anton Lumson, his second of five in the game, to tie at 12-12. Walters put up the next four Marshall points before another three by Lumson cut the lead again to 18-15.

A 3-pointer by D.J. Pigg stretched the Marshals lead out to six points, cut to one on a 5-0 Mayfield run, followed by a 5-0 run for Marshall all from Pigg for a 26-21 lead. A basket by Lane Kennemore at the buzzer cut the Marshals lead to 28-23 at halftime.

Kennemore’s basket to open the second half pulled the Cardinals to within three points, stretched back out to five on a basket by Dawson Jolley but from there, Mayfield would out-score the Marshals 15-4 to lead 40-34 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Marshals had a chance to turn things around when Lucas Nichols hit a three at the start of the 4th quarter to cut their deficit to three points, then a basket by Pigg cut Mayfield’s lead to 41-39.  The Cardinal lead was cut to two points again at 45-43 following a 3-pointer from Skyler Smith but Mayfield finished out the game out-scoring the Marshals 15-5 for a 12-point win and get their 12th victory of the season.

The win extended Mayfield’s current win-streak to four which includes a win last week over Graves County. The Marshals dropped to 15-13 and will face the #1 ranked Christian County Colonels Thursday at home in their last regular season game before the 4th District Tournament on Tuesday when the Marshals will play Calloway County following the Lady Marshals vs. Calloway County game.
