PADUCAH – Falling behind early 7-0 to Tilghman, the Marshals went on a 10-0 run to take the lead and hold on to a 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The teams exchanged leads on baskets by Devon Hart and Dawson Jolley followed by a basket from D.J. Pigg for a 14-11 Marshall County lead. Free throws by Brandon Warfield cut the Marshals lead by one but went back up by three following free throws from Aaron Reed.

Sayveon McEwen hit a three that tied the game at 16-16 with the Marshals gaining the lead one more time on free throws by Skyler Smith. A basket by Dylan Walters tied the game again at 21-21 before the Tornados closed the half out on a 6-0 run for a 27-21 halftime lead.

Tilghman stretched their lead out in the third quarter but the Marshals cut it to eight points at 38-30 before the Tornados closed it out with five points for a 13 point lead heading into the fourth.

Trailing 53-38, a blatant foul on Pigg sent him to the line for technical shots, sinking both, following that up with a basket while fouled and free throw to cut Tilghman’s lead to 10 with three minutes left in the game.

Turnovers by both teams were followed by a three from Hart that put the Tornados back up by 13. Reed and Walters closed the game out with four made free throws to cut the lead to 12 with a final field goal from Tilghman for the 14-point win.

“We had some stretches where we did a lot of good things offensively and I think our defense is getter better”, Head Coach Gus Gillespie said.

Gillespie felt some of their turnovers made the difference in the game but was pleased with his team’s rebounding, pace and defense, things the Marshals are working to improve upon.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys that are trying to step up and fill their roll as a varsity player”, Gillespie said. Saying the team needs to continue to improve and gain more confidence.

Tilghman had four players in double figures, led by Hart with 18. Pigg led all scorers in the game with 19 points. The Marshals were 88.8% at the free throw line making 16 of 18 attempts.

The Marshals will meet Graves County Friday in the second half of a double-header with the Lady Marshals.
