Chicago Currie, Prolific Prep and Bowling Green all winners at Friday’s Hoopfest

BENTON – Fan favorites 7’1″ Thon Maker and brother Matur from Canada’s Athlete Institute Prep (API) played Chicago Curie in game two of Friday’s evening Hoopfest session. Chicago Currie’s Davin Gage, who has committed to DePaul, won MVP honors with 28 points in their 72-69 win over API.

Chicago Currie led 18-15 after the first quarter in a competitive back and forth game with 11 different lead changes. Chicago Currie led 36-34 at halftime and held a 1-point lead going into the fourth quarter, going on to out-score API by two, despite being down by as much as nine points in the final quarter.

Thon Maker led API with 24 points, heading to the free throw line 13 times in the game and sinking eight. Brother Matur scored 15 points hitting seven of 10 at the free throw line. The two brothers pulled in 25 rebounds between them.

API plays Prolific Prep, CA, Saturday at 8:00.

In the third game Friday night, it took two overtime periods for Prolific Prep, CA to best Huntington Prep, WV, 83-77 in one of the best match-ups in recent Hoopfest memory.

Josh Jackson, an undecided #1 ranked senior in the nation, led Prolific Prep with 34 points and 19 rebounds battling the entire game with #11 Miles Bridges who has committed to Michigan State. Bridges scored 27 points and pulled in 12 rebounds.

Prolific Prep’s Devon Daniels, a Utah commit, scored 14 points and Huntington Prep’s Curtis Jones scored 21 points and has committed to Indiana next year.

Prolific Prep will play API on Saturday at 8:00.

The final game on Friday pitted Graves County against the #1 ranked Bowling Green,  last year’s Kentucky State Runner-up. The Purples were led by junior Terry Taylor with 28 points and 13 rebounds in their 62-50 win over the Eagles.

Graves County led by three at the end of the first quarter and took a 23-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. Going into the fourth quarter the two teams were locked up at 37 a piece with Bowling Green going on to out-score Graves County 25-13 for the 12 point win.

Ryan Mathis scored 13 for the Eagles followed by Chris Vogt with 11 points. The boards were huge for the Purples who out-rebounded the Eagles 41-18.
