Valentino Willis shares important message with comedy and basketball

SHARPE – Elementary school students across Marshall County were treated this week to a funny, entertaining but serious message from Valentino Willis of Harlem Comedy Basketball. Willis had a long career in basketball around the world, initially drafted by the New Jersey Nets, he played in the Eastern Professional Basketball League where he averaged 25 points per game.

Willis eventually found his niche in comedy basketball and has been entertaining fans across the country now for decades as well as conducting basketball clinics at summer camps and YMCA’s, participates with the Special Olympics and March of Dimes Walk America.

He has also appeared in several commercials and movies with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross in the “The Wiz”, and Ray Bolger in “For Heaven’s Sake”.

Willis finds joy in working with kids imparting his humorous message for a serious subject talking to them about avoiding the dangers that will come into their lives like drugs, alcohol and bullying.

“I love to work with kids”, Willis said. “I tell them never to give up and always give it their best, no matter how difficult it may seem sometimes.”

Willis emphasizes education and to listen to the people who care about them; parents, teachers, counselors and principals. He says, “It’s okay to laugh at yourself sometimes! We all need a little fun!”
