MAYFIELD —Saturday, September 26, is the date for the 10th annual community Mayfield-Graves County Needline & Food Pantry “monster” yard and bake sale.
The sale will be held in the old Gotham City building in the Mayfield Shopping Plaza behind the Princess Theater from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Last year the sale raised about $12,000 for the Needline & Food Pantry that provides emergency food and help with utilities for local needy residents, according to Event Chairman, Tommy Powell.
“This will be a blowout of a sale,” Powell said. “We have so many donations it looks like a mini Wal-Mart, which actually used to be at this location years ago. Our tables are loaded with appliances, house wares, toys, books, tools and everything imaginable. This year we have some really good furniture bargains too, especially thanks to Gilliam Thompson and the Graves County Public Library.
“This is a community-wide event that has grown like crazy over the years and is supported by many individuals, churches, businesses and organizations. Hunger and poor nutrition are right here in Mayfield and Graves County and money from this event will assist the Needline & Food Pantry in helping the truly needy right here at home.”
Church sponsors this year are First Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana, First Presbyterian Church, Woman on Mission of First Baptist Church, Calvary United Methodist Church, Spence Chapel United Methodist Church, First United Pentecostal Church, First Church of the Nazarene and Trinity United Methodist Church.
The Needline & Food Pantry serve about 350 families per month despite the fact that families generally can only receive emergency food help about every two months because of the lack of resources.
“We are so excited about this event every year because this sale and the Empty Bowls project are our largest fund-raisers for the year,” said Jackie Herndon, Needline Director. “We urge everyone to come out, have fun and make the sale a huge success.”
Volunteers are needed to help before, during and after the sale with cleanup. Contact First Christian Church, 270-247-2204, if you can help.
Leftovers from the sale will be donated to JU Kevil Center and other local charities.
