DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County High School sent the track team off this morning to the KHSAA State Track and Field Championships in Lexington.
Twenty-five qualifiers plus a couple of alternates made the trip to Lexington this morning and will prepare to compete in the Class 3A Championships which is scheduled for Saturday at 4:30.
Goals for both coaches are for their athletes to compete and have a good meet, hoping to see many PR’s and possibly some school records fall.
The top eight will receive medals and many Marshals and Lady Marshals stand a good chance to come home with a medal.
“Our girls 4 x 200 is in the fast heat so I feel like they have a good shot at a medal”, Head Coach Cory Westerfield said. “Stephanie Russell is also in the fast heat in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles and Sydney Goff has the fastest time in her heat in the 100 meter hurdles.”
Coach Westerfield feels that high jumper Michaela Manley has a good chance at medaling and is looking for a couple of school records to be broken in the 4 x 200 meter relay and the 300 meter hurdles.
The Marshals 4 x 800 meter relay team is seeded first with the fastest time in the state with a time of 8:07.
“I feel like something in the 7:50’s will win the 4 x 800”, Head Coach Jared Rosa said. “Teams like Dunbar and St. X didn’t run all their top guys in their regional meets, so I think it’s anybody’s race.”
Teams can submit eight runners per relay before the regional meets and can pull from those eight to make up each relay.
Rosa also looks for the 4 x 400 relay, Nathan Solomon in the 400 meters and Austin Shackleford and Jacob Carnine in the 800 meters as good chances to medal.
