MARSHALL COUNTY- Folks in the community have banded together in an all-out effort to aid Calvert City Police Officer Nick Spears and his family following a single vehicle collision that nearly took the young officer’s life last Saturday night. Spears, just 24 years old, is married to wife Amber, and the couple have a nine month-old daughter, Kylee.
Not only have several fund-raising efforts been planned to help the family during this time, but volunteers have already put dozens of hours worth of work into completing a repair project on Spears’s home in the past week alone. The officer and his family had been working to complete the work prior to his accident, but with the injuries he sustained, will be unable to meet the bank's deadline for completion.
Fellow Calvert City officer Robert West said he is committed to making sure all the necessary repairs are completed before Spears returns home from the hospital. West has been working each and every day since the time of the accident, with the help of numerous volunteers, to complete the work. "Since his family is busy taking care of him, we are trying to step in and take care of this for them," West said. "He had been working to make the all of these repairs, but as with any project like this, he ran into a lot more damage and additional work than he was originally anticipating. It's been a very time consuming process for Nick and his family."
West said the crew is currently in the process of finishing the home’s front deck, fence panels, laundry room and driveway. Another crew is also in the process of adding a temporary handicapped accessible ramp to the home. While there has been no specific timeline established, early estimates indicate Spears could spend at least three months in a wheel chair after being released from the hospital. West said he is currently in the process of ensuring the Spears home is handicapped accessible on the inside, as well as on the outside. Spears is still in Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., where is recovering from two operations. His family reports he is making slow, but steady progress and was reunited with his baby girl on Saturday, the first time since his accident. Early reports indicate it could be at least a year before Spears can return to work.
A benefit yard sale was held over the weekend in conjunction with the 400 mile yard sale, where some $4,000 was raised to assist the family. A benefit concert has also been scheduled for Saturday, June 19 at Calvert City’s Memorial Park, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. There will be inflatables for the kids, volleyball, horseshoes, cornhole tourneys, food, drinks, desserts and music including the Tony Logue band, Craig Russell, Adverse Occurance, Hollerhead, Lock and Load, Christian gospel and bluegrass from the McKendrees and Campbells, and a little country too. Cost is $5 per person for all day fun. ALL PROCEEDS GO TO THE FAMILY...T -Shirts are available now for $10 and hats for $12.
