swimregionals-gordonOWENSBORO - The KHSAA Region One Swimming Championships were held Friday and Saturday at the Owensboro Health Park with swimmers vying for a coveted top 16 spot in each event to move on to Saturday's finals and a chance at a trip to the state meet.

Nine Marshall County swim team members advanced to Saturday's finals individually and in relay events. Austin Gordon placed 11th on Friday for a spot in the 200 yard individual medley finals and 15th in the 100 yard backstroke for a place in Saturday's finals. Gordon finished ninth in the 100 yard backstroke final breaking his own school record with a time of 1:01.91. In Saturday's 200 yard individual medley final, Gordon was disqualified during his race due to an improper flip turn, but finished the race in 11th in what would have been another school record.
Paul Hudson also qualified for Saturday's finals individually in two events, the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke, finishing Friday 15th in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 breaststroke. His breaststroke time of 1:10.79 broke his own school record set this year, then Hudson turned around on Saturday breaking it one more time with his seventh place finishing time of 1:09.43.
Grant Park finished 14th Friday in the 100 yard freestyle putting him in Saturday's final race where he placed 14th.
Gordon, Hudson, Park and Landon Lindsey qualified for finals in both the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay events with their best finish coming on Saturday in the 200 yard freestyle relay finishing 13th.
Abby Spicer, Allie Pearson, Carli Merrick and Jessica Anderson put together a 16th place finish Friday in the 200 yard medley relay just sneaking in to the final qualifying spot for Saturday's finals where they placed 15th.
Spicer, Merrick, Anderson and Sidney Jackson placed 14th in Friday's preliminaries in the 200 yard freestyle relay and moved up one spot to 13th in Saturday's relay finals.
Carli Merrick was awarded the Region One Sportsmanship award at the meet.

Third place in girls standings went to Daviess County High School and the Marshall girls placed 18th.
